Fumile

DesignerManufacturer

Since 2016

Fumile is a millinery shop that creates hats for men and women. Each piece is custom-made by hand. The company sells both fur and wool hats for winter and straw and recycled fabric hats for summer.

Fumile was founded in 2016 by Alexandre Surprenant. Nothing in his background seems to suggest that he would have a career in millinery. Born on a dairy farm in Saint-Alexandre-d’Iberville, he played professional soccer for the Montreal Impact, and then worked in construction for several years. However, after taking a hat-making course with milliner Lucie Grégoire, he discovered a passion for the profession. Grégoire also let him use her workshop when he was just starting out.

Shortly after launching his company, Alexandre Surprenant quickly developed a clientele of Quebec celebrities who gave him a lot of exposure.

He has designed hats for singers Yann Perreau and Alex Nevsky, actress Caroline Dhavernas, and former football player-turned-commentator Étienne Boulay.

In 2018, Alexandre Surprenant joined forces with Mélodie Lavergne, the owner of clothing and accessories brand Sass Creation. Together, they opened the boutique Fumile & Sass on Montreal’s Amherst Street to sell their creations. Their products are also available on the brands’ e-commerce Website.
